PIGMENTATION

Hypermelanosis or melasma are terms applied to the acquired pattern of pigmentation appearing commonly in women but also occurring in men. Hormonal factors, certain drugs or genetics may contribute to the occurrence of this irregular darkening of skin often affecting the cheeks, forehead and chin. The pigmentation becomes more apparent following sun exposure.

Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation occurs in individuals who tan easily and is seen following inflammation of the skin from any cause (such as acne). Assessment by Dr Joanna Day is required before any treatment recommendations can be made. Options may include topical prescriptions, IPL photorejuvenation, ALA/IPL treatments, or any combination of the above.

Note: Not all cases of facial pigmentation are amenable to treatment.
